Don’t Stay Behind the Camera: The Importance of Photos with Mom, Military Family Memories
April 30, 2025 By  Deanna Marr With  0 Comment
In  Family

Too often, moms stay behind the camera. Discover why photos with mom are important—and how these portraits become lasting gifts for their children.

Military life is such a different lifestyle than most, full of transitions, distance and sacrifices. The only constant is change. From deployments, to training, to being on the ready to help with natural disasters here at home, life is always unpredictable. But there can be one thing that brings comfort – photos with mom.

As a military wife and mom myself, I know we want to document everything for our deployed spouse. So they don’t have to miss our children growing up. This means there are many images of our kids, and images of our kids with our spouse. Often there is a real lack of photos of us with our children. But your children need to see you in some of those photos, and time passes so quickly! Isn’t it time you got out from behind that camera?

Your Kids Need To See You In Their Story

It is a large part of military life – more often than not, parenting falls to those of us at home. If you have been posted away from family, you may not have the amazing village everyone talks about when it comes to raising kids. Because of this, our kids have come to rely on us to be their safe havens, their stability. You are the thing they know they can always count on, no matter what is going on in the world around them.

Remind them of this comfort and stability with photos of you with them! They will hold these dear especially in later years, and be reminded of how you were there for them. These portraits will serve as a wonderful reminder that you were in fact there with them, through the thick and thin!

Military Life is Always Changing, Capture the Now

For some military families, postings are short and moves are frequent. Some families aren’t sure where they will be in three to five years. But they almost certainly know they won’t be where they are now.

What an amazing way to capture this moment in time, this part of your adventure, by being in the photos with your children? They will be reminded of this posting and this time of their lives. Again, portraits of you with your kids will show the love and connection that they always have with you, regardless of location.

Photos With Mom Become Anchors

Military life is unpredictable at best. It can also come with tremendous amounts of uncertainty and nervousness, especially when our loved ones are on deployment. For kids, photos with their mom can offer a sense of home, even if home is suddenly on the other end of the country.

Your kids will look back one day and appreciate the photos with you, their mom, and revel in the security they felt as long as you were there. Your strength and love will shine through, leaving a lasting legacy for your children.

You’re the heartbeat of your family—through every move, every deployment, every homecoming. But don’t let yourself disappear from the story you’re helping write.

Step into the frame. Let your children see you, now and always. If you are ready to create lasting portraits with your children, feel free to reach out, using my contact page.
