What to do in Edmonton in January 2024 with older kids

My list of the top things to do in Edmonton when your kids are a little bit older!

Child playing in snow holding a snow ball, Edmonton in January 2024

If you’re like me, you see lists all the time of things to do with your younger children. It can be more challenging to find something to do with your older children in Edmonton. My oldest is 10 years old, so trying to find something to do with her is more challenging than finding something to do with my 5 year old. With this in mind, I wanted to share my top ideas for things to do in Edmonton in January 2024 with my pre-teen. I hope it helps you find some new and fun things to do as well!

Skating at Edmonton City Hall, January 2024 Schedule

Check out the rink in front of Edmonton City Hall, in Churchill Square, for some fun! Don’t have skates? No worries! There are free skate rentals Monday to Friday evenings from 4 pm to 9 pm, as well as Saturdays from 12 pm to 9 pm, and Sundays from 12 pm to 5 pm.

Additionally, on Friday and Saturday nights, you will find live DJs performing from 6 pm to 9 pm. So, if you don’t skate, you can still head on down and dance! January 12 features Chu the Producer, January 13 features DJ Diamond, January 26 features DJ DOC, and January 27 feature Jaden January. For a complete list of entertainment, visit https://www.edmontonarts.ca/event/winter-city-weekends.

Thank you to Edmonton Arts Council for the fun down at City Hall!

Go sledding!

Now that winter has finally decided to arrive here in Edmonton and grace us with some snow, take your kids sledding! You can purchase inexpensive sleds at Walmart or Canadian Tire, and head out to your nearest hill for an afternoon of fun (and hiking it back up those hills is no joke! Surely, it’s a good way to burn off extra energy!) One of my favorite hills to sled on from my childhood is the big hill in Rundle Park! It is long and fun, perfect for bigger kids. Moreover, sleds are something you can hang on to year after year, and take them out again next winter!

Build a snow fort – another fun thing to do in Edmonton in January 2024

Head on over to your local dollar store, and you can pick up snow molds – we have brick ones – and head out into the yard to build a fort. Alternatively, just make a big pile of snow to jump in to! My kids spend quite a bit of time playing just in a big pile of snow in the front yard. All things considered, never underestimate the joy of simple play!

Free Admission to the Art Gallery of Alberta, January 2024

Looking for something indoors to do? Head on down to the Art Gallery of Alberta in downtown Edmonton. At the present time, they offer free admission on the last Thursday of every month from 4 pm to 7 pm. As a result, the Art Gallery becomes even more budget friendly for your family to check it out! Generally speaking, the building itself is a work of art! However, a few exhibits are done at the end of January 2024, including Mosiac, Ally McIntyre: Kindling, and The Collectors’ Cosmos: The Meakins-McClaran Print Collection. Check them out this month! For a list of all the exhibits, visit https://www.youraga.ca/exhibitions/current-exhibitions.

Take in an Edmonton Oil Kings Game in Edmonton in January 2024

The Edmonton Oil Kings are our WHL team! These games show case the future stars of the NHL and will get you inside Rogers Place to watch high quality hockey at a far lower ticket price than the Edmonton Oilers. At the time of this writing in January 2024, ticket prices start at only $20 a seat, making it more affordable for the average family to attend. Moreover, with the LRT going right to the building, you don’t even need to worry about paying for parking. Visit https://chl.ca/whl-oilkings/ for a schedule and link to purchase tickets!

Book an outdoor photo session in Edmonton in January 2024!

With some warmer days, it can be a great time of year for an outdoor photo session with your family! You can plan a session in a snowy field or while you are outdoor skating. Or bring along a cute little sled for the kids and a warm blanket to cuddle with your hunny in. Worried about staying warm? Check out my blog post with my top tips for staying warm in your winter photo session here.

I hope this helps give you a few ideas of what to do with your older children here in Edmonton in January 2024. Leave me a comment and let me know which one you checked out!
