Incorporating your personality into your couple and car photography session.
This couple and car photography session really spoke to me. Not only because I am a photographer here in Edmonton but it also spoke to my mechanic’s heart! If you didn’t know, before I became a family and couples portrait photographer, I was an automotive service mechanic. This just so happens to be where I met Mike. He was the only one that would beat me in our exams!
We stayed in touch over the years and last fall I was looking for a creative outlet session. When I saw him post about his classic Chevy, I knew exactly what my outlet would be! I knew him and his gorgeous wife Tobey would be happy to play the part in this car photography session!
Choosing the right location for the car photography session was key!
I knew I wanted a very distinct country, dirt road setting and feeling for the session. I am very lucky that they just happen to live on a property that isn’t in the city. Because of this, we could make use of the beautiful scenery surrounding their home. I wanted the backgrounds to be soft because I really wanted to show off Mike, Tobey and the cars. I didn’t want to retract from their amazing love and personalities but having some stunning or bright backgrounds. The calm, prairie fields were perfect for this session, mixed with the backdrop of his own shop to mix things up!
The artwork of them in the shop was at Mike’s asking, as he wanted to incorporate them into the session as well. I am always ready to include locations that are special to my clients!
Getting creative in our poses was so important to me!
I was really going through a growth period last fall and I was forcing myself to try different poses that I normally refrained from. But every pose I wasn’t sure about seemed to become my favorite of the session! From capturing his reflection in the hubcap, to capturing them gazing at each other through the rear window, to Mike’s soft gaze off into the distance across the hood of his car were all ideas I had in my head and I was eager to see how they’d turn out.
I love all of them! The hub cap is super unique, yet turned out super clear. Likewise, the one of them in the car and gazing at each other through the rear window reminds me of something their kids will look back at in 30 years and reminisce about their parents and the love they had for each other. It almost feels iconic to me! Equally important, the image of Mike gazing intently across the hood of the car I feel really captures Mike’s softer and deeper side, the intellect deep in thought. Overall, I love the differences in all the images and how they all evoke different emotions.
Finding their personalities through photography
I couldn’t resist capturing the playful love between these two. Mike and Tobey are very much in love and it comes through so naturally for them. They love to laugh and be silly. Additionally, these two have remained very youthful in their love for each other. The ones of them laying on the front seat, the one of them looking at each other at the front of the car, the ones of them laughing together – these are all parts of couples portrait sessions that I love to capture.
I love showing as many sides as I can of my families and couples. Because these are the ones where they are laughing and giggling and being natural are always the best smiles! Be sure to leave me a comment if you agree!
