Moms – they guide us and they love us unconditionally. Moms are there for us when we need them most. They hold our hands when we are little and our hearts when we are adults. Moms are often the glue that holds the family together. They always find a way to get everything done, even when we have no idea how they manage it. And what better way to capture this time than with a mommy and me photo session?
As a photographer, I love offering Edmonton mommy and me sessions for Mother’s Day. I aim to try get a few portraits of moms and their little ones during our family sessions as well. These portraits mean the world to me. It is my wish to help other Edmonton moms have these portraits for their own homes.
Why Mommy and Me artwork means so much to me
And here is why – my mom was amazing (I mean, all moms are, but I’m biased). She was a stay at home mom. She was always there when my brother and I needed her – middle of the day, middle of the night, it didn’t matter. Mom was there. She died unexpectedly back in 2017. While we were going through the photo albums before her funeral, I realized a few things. She didn’t love being in front of the camera. We went many years of my childhood without a family portrait. There were desperately few photos of just her and I.
I had taken one with her at the last concert we attended together (we both love Johnny Reid!). It is now one of my most cherished images. I also have one of her and my dad with my oldest at some family photos we did when my oldest was 3. My daughter has that hanging in her room. I really wish I had a mommy and me portrait of her and I. My brother was better at taking selfies with them when they were together but I fell short on numerous occasions.
Documenting memories for families with a mommy and me photo session
Because of this, I aim to make sure the love of a mother with her child is documented, to forever remind the children that their mother was an active participant in their lives and that the children are so loved and cherished. Picture it – imagine being 7 or 8 years old again and having a canvas of you getting a piggy back from your mom or walking with your mom hanging above your bed. Imagine being a 4 year old little girl and having a portrait of you and your mom looking at leaves together to remind you of the time your mom spent playing with you. Imagine the memories and reminders these families will have for a life time.
Always offering Edmonton mommy and me photo sessions!
Take it from me (and not as a photographer, but as a daughter who regrets not taking enough photos of her mom!), don’t wait to take those photos with your kids. Have your hubby take some, encourage him to catch you in action with the kiddos and take the photo. Your kids will not care how you looked (I want to lose some weight first, my hair isn’t styled, I have no make up on). Trust me on this one – they don’t care if you’re put together, how big or small you are, what you are wearing – they simply love their mom.
Plan the mommy and me session, get the artwork hung, make the album for your kids to cherish. Don’t wait.
