What are the best outfits to wear to a family portrait session? Your family portrait outfit FAQs answered!
You finally convince your hubby that it is time to update that family photo. But then you ask yourself – what on earth are we going to wear? Here are a few tips on what to wear for your family portrait session!!!
Firstly – think neutrals at all possible!!
Bright, neon colours are not the best for a photo session. Try and stay with soft pastel colours or neutrals. If shooting in a studio, ask your photographer what colour of backdrop they will be using. If they are using a black backdrop, don’t wear a black shirt. You could end up looking like a floating head. Same goes with white. Try to avoid matching whatever colour of background they are using.
Wear clothes that flatter and fit you.
Be comfortable but dressy, if that’s your style. You don’t want to wear anything uncomfortable that you will be pulling or picking at the entire session. Ladies, try your best to ensure your bra straps are covered adequately and make sure you aren’t wearing a light sheer shirt and a bright coloured bra – your bra will show up!!
What about matching or colour coordinating?
It is good to match or coordinate outfits with your group – just ensure that everyone gets the memo! If you all plan on wearing jeans and white t-shirts, it’ll look odd if one family member ends up in black slacks and a grey pull over. Likewise, try to all stay in a colour family. I once wore an orange shirt for a family photo and I stand out in the sea of blues and pinks that the rest of my family wore. We definitely did not discuss outfits! You can all wear different outfits, as long as they all have a common colour pulled from each of them, and as long as they aren’t clashing.
What are your tips for hair and makeup?
Keep your makeup neutral (unless you are going for a high fashion shoot) and your hair simple. Tightly pulled back hair isn’t necessarily the best for a family photo shoot.
Any last pointers?
Keep the weather in mind if shooting outdoors. If you are shooting in the winter, runners may not be the best if the photographer wants you standing in snow. If shooting in the fall, long hair may whip around in the wind if not pinned back. Dress for the weather conditions. Consider matching jackets if shooting outdoors in the cooler months.
Avoid wearing ball caps (they will block the sun from getting to your eyes) and avoid wearing shirts with tell tale logos or images on them. You want the focus to be on your gorgeous family, not what someone wore.
I hope this helps give you some ideas on what to wear for your next family photos! Here are three great examples of co-ordination and outfit matching that you can use as inspiration!!
Until next time, keep smiling!!
