A list of my favorite family portrait locations in Edmonton.
It’s the time of year where everyone is looking for the best place to take family photos in Edmonton. So, here is my list of my favorite places!
Rundle Park.
This gem is tucked away in the northeast corner of Edmonton. It features wooded areas, a playground, bridges over the North Saskatchewan River, and picturesque ponds. It offers so many different backdrops for family photos, it gives a wonderful variety for clients to choose from.

97 Street.
In north Edmonton, 97 Street between 144 Avenue and 137 Avenue is a very popular spot for fall family photos. Evidently, it offers gorgeous colored trees and you can get in and amongst the trees for photos as well. Additionally, you can go into the Greisbach neighborhood and use the pond and surrounding areas for a change of scenery. It will still be beautiful. This location gets very busy during fall photo season.

Whitemud Park.
Whitemud Park (the portion near Fort Edmonton Park and Fox Drive) offers a wide variety of backdrops – from forested areas, paths, bridges, and river views. Indeed, it is the perfect spot for the family who isn’t completely sure of what they are looking for in their family portraits. However, be prepared to spend about an hour here, walking and covering the various options.

Whyte Avenue / Old Strathcona.
This area is full of older buildings, graffiti and that truly urban feel. It is perfect for the family that doesn’t want a nature backdrop but still wants to be outside for their portraits. This area offers bright colors, a funky vibe, and classic brick buildings. Be sure to check if any festivals are happening in Old Strathcona before planning a session here. But always be prepared for it to be a busier area. Also, don’t be afraid to go up a few alleys – there are amazing murals hidden there!

Edmonton River Valley.
Lastly, almost any part of the North Saskatchewan River Valley that runs through the heart of Edmonton is a stunning location for family portraits. If you do a little exploring, you’ll find cute little paths almost anywhere that you can use that will look amazing. In this case, I found this little trail in north Edmonton, around 137 Avenue and 20 Street, just north of Hermitage Park.
